The New Open Studio: What's Changed and What to Expect

We rebuilt Open Studio around the question every musician asks: what should I work on next? Here's what's new, and where to find your stuff.

Start with your dashboard

Every member now has a dedicated dashboard for their level. Pick the one that matches where you are and you will land in a home base built around what you actually need to work on.

Level Dashboard What it is built for
Beginner Jazz Piano Foundations Building your first jazz vocabulary: chords, common progressions, and tunes you can play start to finish.
Intermediate Jazz Piano Expansions Sounding more like yourself: better voicings, smarter improv over changes, and the consistency to sound legit every time.
Advanced Jazz Piano Method Saying something with the music: harmonic depth, melodic phrasing, and a personal voice.

Not sure which one? Start with the level that feels like home. You can always switch, and your access does not change.

What you will find on every dashboard

Every dashboard now opens with a set of starter lessons designed to be the first thing you watch. They are the "press play here" of your level, built to get you into the music quickly, not to make you wade through an intro.

  • Beginner: Jazz Piano Jumpstart. A 7-lesson on-ramp with Adam Maness and Peter Martin, each lesson backed by Guided Practice Sessions with the Open Studio trio.
  • Intermediate: Jazz Piano for the Bandstand. A focused mini-course on what it actually takes to hold your own with other musicians. 3 lessons, 3 Guided Practice Sessions each.
  • Advanced: Jazz Piano Method Kickstart. A curated set of starter lessons from Peter Martin to orient you inside the 600+ lesson library before you go exploring on your own.

Each dashboard is organized around the five ingredients of jazz piano: ear training, technique, voicings, improvisation, and rhythm. You will see them woven through the weekly lessons and the skill pathways. They are the throughline of everything we teach.

A few specific things to look for:

  • A new lesson every week, focused on a real tune you would hear at a jam.
  • Skill pathways that let you zoom in on the one thing you want to improve: voicings, improv, ear training, rhythm.
  • A core pathway sequencing courses from where you are to where you want to go.

What changed on the platform

Everything for a lesson lives in one place. Guided Practice Sessions (GPS), PDF worksheets, lesson descriptions, and keyboard shortcuts now appear directly below the lesson video. No more hunting around.

Your bookmarks moved with you. Anything you bookmarked on the old platform is already waiting for you on the new one. Bookmarks you used to set on individual GPSs now show up as bookmarks on the parent lesson. Same content, better organized.

Lessons are marked complete when you have actually finished them. If a lesson has multiple videos or GPSs, it will not check off until you have watched them all. This keeps your progress honest and makes sure nothing slips through the cracks.

You can share lessons in The Hang. Hit the Share button on any lesson and paste the link into The Hang. You can even have it jump to the exact second you want someone to hear.
